Little Canada’ is a new experience in portable Canadian Culture and it’s expecting to draw some big crowds for its launch – which heralds a series of new Sunday events in Surrey Street market.
A raffle is being organised alongside the event that will see two people flying to Toronto for the trip of a lifetime. But for those not fortunate enough to win a visit to the ‘great white north’ there will be plenty of opportunities to sample the food, drink, and culture of Canada.
Over 69,000 people came out to Canada Day in Trafalgar Square to help celebrate the year of Canada’s 150th anniversary – and many more events are happening around the world to mark this date.
One of the Little Canada organisers, Mark Sultana, said: “When people talk about street food they usually think about south east Asia. But the Canadian’s are just as good at eating out, so you can tuck into some brilliant hot waffles and maple syrup or try a plate of Poutine – one of Canada’s national delicacies. As for drinks, we’ve a range of specialist cocktails as well as a few beers that will be familiar to Canadians but that are still relatively unknown over here. Sleemans Honey Brown and Railside Session Ale are just two that beer aficionados will love.”
The programme includes a full day of live music – and the musicians have already been causing quite a stir in town to promote the event as the Sons of Scotland, one of the Canada’s top Pipe Bands, recently performed an impromptu street show outside Boxpark at East Croydon station.
Mark continued: “Sunday 17 September is a great chance to experience some real Canadian Culture – and it’s free to come along, so everyone’s welcome.”
